Anne Frank’s diary pages are historical documents written while she was in hiding during the Holocaust, chronicling her life, thoughts, and the realities of confinement, with pages covering everything from daily life and family dynamics to her development as a writer and reflections on sexuality, including some hidden sections revealed with modern technology, forming the basis of the famous book, “The Diary of a Young Girl”. The original diaries, written in a red-checked notebook and later notebooks, are preserved and studied, with new insights emerging over time as hidden passages are deciphered.

Anne Frank’s legacy didn’t end with the last entry in her notebook. While in hiding, Anne poured her creativity not only into her now-famous diary, but also into short stories, essays, and even early plans for a novel based on her experiences in the Secret Annex. After the war, when Otto Frank—the only surviving member of the Frank family—returned to Amsterdam, he discovered Anne’s writings painstakingly preserved by Miep Gies and others who had helped shelter the family.

Recognizing the importance of Anne’s words, Otto worked diligently to have her diary published. In 1947, after editing Anne’s manuscripts and combining her diary entries with other writings, he oversaw the first publication of “Het Achterhuis” (“The Secret Annex”) in Dutch. The book quickly gained international attention, eventually being translated into dozens of languages—including English, where it’s known as “The Diary of a Young Girl”—and published by major houses like Doubleday and Penguin, ensuring Anne’s voice would reach readers around the world.
